At the request of 15th District Attorney General Tommy Thompson, TBI Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning in Smith County.

Preliminary information indicates the incident happened at approximately 6:00 at a home on Boyd Lane, near Carthage, where deputies from the Smith County Sheriff’s Department were responding to a report of a stabbing earlier in the morning, in which a man, identified as Gary Wayne Madewell (DOB 3-24-81), allegedly attacked a woman, who was subsequently hospitalized. When deputies arrived at the home to investigate, they observed Madewell in possession of a knife, and, for reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in at least one deputy firing upon Madewell, who was struck and died at the scene. No law enforcement officers sustained injury in the incident.

TBI Agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of this ongoing investigation. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for his review and consideration.

The TBI does not identify the law enforcement officers involved in these types of incidents and, instead, refers questions of that nature to their respective agency.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted on TBINewsroom.com.
