MEMPHIS – At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich, TBI Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting in Memphis that occurred late Thursday night.

Preliminary information indicates the incident happened at approximately 11:43 p.m. in the 3600 block of Hallbrook Street in the Frayser community of Memphis.  Officers with the Memphis Police Department were responding to an unrelated call when they observed a loud disturbance between three individuals.  As officers approached, one of the individuals, who was armed, for reasons still under investigation, failed to comply with officers’ demands.  The situation escalated, resulting in two officers firing shots, striking the man and fatally wounding him.  The deceased individual has been identified as Antonio Smith, Jr. (DOB: 6/1/84) of Memphis.  No officers were injured during the incident.

TBI Agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of this ongoing investigation.  Throughout the process, investigative findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for her review and consideration.

The TBI does not identify the law enforcement officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective agency.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted on
