COOKEVILLE – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has obtained an indictment for a Putnam County woman accused of filing a false report of rape after a stay in the Putnam County Jail.
At the request of 13th District Attorney General Randal York, TBI Special Agents began investigating the allegations of 19-year-old Lacee Nicole Smith on November 25, 2013. Several days earlier, after being released on bond for a DUI charge, the Cookeville woman told her boyfriend she had been raped while in the jail. Her boyfriend subsequently reported the accusation to authorities. During the course of the investigation, Special Agents reviewed the jail’s surveillance videos and determined Smith was not raped. During an interview with investigators, Smith later admitted to fabricating the story in an attempt to gain attention from her boyfriend.
On Monday, the Putnam County Grand Jury returned an indictment for Smith, charging her with one count of False Reporting. Today, a TBI Agent and a Putnam County Deputy arrested Smith at her Rocky Point Road home. She was booked into the Putnam County Jail and later released after posting $2,500 bond.
