FENTRESS COUNTY – An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation into deceptive business practices at a Jamestown funeral home has resulted in a 52-count indictment.
In May, at the request of 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler, TBI agents began investigating allegations of theft and fraud involving the Mundy Funeral Home. During the course of the investigation, agents gathered evidence indicating that Chadrick “Chad” Mundy (DOB:12/28/88), the owner of the business, filed numerous fraudulent insurance claims related to burial policies and financially exploited elderly and vulnerable clients for personal gain. Agents also gathered evidence indicating that Mundy mishandled cremated remains.
On Wednesday, the Fentress County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Mundy with twelve counts of Fraudulent Insurance Act, fifteen counts of Theft of Property over $2,500, five counts of Theft of Property over $1,000, four counts of Theft of Property under $1,000, nine counts of Financial Exploitation of an Elderly or Vulnerable Adult, four counts of Abuse of a Corpse, two counts of Criminal Simulation, and one count of Worthless Checks. On Wednesday afternoon, he was arrested and booked into the Fentress County Jail on an $80,000 bond.
The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.
