Updated 8/20/19 at 1:20 p.m. ET to include details about the 911 call.

Updated 8/14/19 at 10:45 a.m. ET: The deceased individual has been identified as Jerry Orlando Weaver (12/01/67), of Clinton.

At the request of 7th District Attorney General Dave Clark, TBI Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening in Clinton.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:40 p.m., officers with the Clinton Police Department, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and the 7th Judicial Crime Task Force responded to the 600 block of W. Broad Street after receiving a call from a resident stating that a family member was near the roadway with a gun. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the man, who was threatening to harm himself. In an attempt to deescalate the situation, officers tried to negotiate with the subject and convince him to drop the weapon. At some point during the exchange, the individual reportedly pointed the gun at officers, resulting in the officers firing their service weapons, striking him. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The name of the male subject is currently being withheld pending the notification of relatives. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Agents continue to work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. As in any case, TBI’s investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.

As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
