Updated 12/14/18, 8:45am: The deceased individual has been identified as Andre Horton, DOB 09/22/1976.
At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich, TBI Special Agents are responding to a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred late Thursday night at James Road, approximately 1/4 mile west of Austin Peay Highway, in Memphis.
Preliminary reports indicate that at around 10 o’clock pm, two Memphis police officers were dispatched to a complaint of a person in the street with a gun. At some point after officers arrived, the circumstances of which are still being investigated, the situation escalated, resulting in one of the officers firing at the subject, striking him. The subject was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The gun found at the scene has been determined to be a BB gun.
The TBI Violent Crime Response Team unit with six Special Agent Forensic Scientists is responding to the scene, and will collect evidence, while four field Agents and a Special Agent in Charge continue to interview relevant witnesses and gather information.
TBI Agents serve as fact-finders in these investigations. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for her consideration and review. That office will ultimately make any charging determinations.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments.
Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation.
