At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich – and per the Memorandum of Understanding in place between the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, and the District Attorney General – the TBI is investigating the circumstances of an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Lakeland earlier today.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred shortly after Noon in the 10000 block of Woodland Pine Cove West in Lakewood, when a women, identified as Nancy Jane Lewellyn (DOB 9-27-57), contacted 911, making disturbing statements and threatening violence toward anyone who might respond to her location. Three deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, after which the woman appears to have exited her home, brandished a weapon, and pointed it at the deputies. Two of the three deputies fired upon the woman. She was struck and subsequently died at Regional One in Memphis. No law enforcement officers were injured in connection to this incident. An autopsy will be performed in Memphis.
The TBI has Agents and Forensic Scientists working to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in connection to this case and will share findings with the District Attorney General throughout the process for her further consideration and review. In this, and all investigations, the TBI acts only as “fact-finders.” The determination as to whether the officer’s actions were justified rests solely with the District Attorney General.
Per TBI policy, the agency does not identify the officer/s involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department/s.
