At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night in Memphis.
Just before 7:30 p.m., members of the Memphis Safe Task Force responded to a report of a man armed with a gun, threatening to harm himself, in the 2100 block of Westchester Drive. Preliminary information indicates that upon their arrival, they encountered Jonah Neal (DOB: 08/30/2000) with multiple weapons inside the residence. For reasons still under investigation, a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent fired her weapon. Neal was pronounced deceased at the scene. At this time, it is not immediately clear whether Neal died as a result of the agent firing upon him or if it was self-inflicted stab wounds. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. No officers were injured during the incident.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
