Updated 3/19/23, 1:25 p.m. – The deceased individual has been identified as Melissa S. Horton (DOB 4/9/79) of Brownsville.

At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday in Bartlett involving the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary information indicates that this afternoon Shelby County deputies spotted a vehicle involved in an incident in Fayette County, which occurred earlier in the day.  At approximately 2:40 p.m., deputies stopped the vehicle on Ellis Road near Golden Valley Lane in Bartlett.  For reasons still under investigation, as officers approached the vehicle, shots were fired, and the driver was struck.  The female driver, who was the only individual in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  No officers were injured in this incident.

At this time, this investigation remains active and ongoing.  TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.  Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration.  The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters.  That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department to answer as it sees fit.

Any available updates on this investigation, including the identity of the deceased individual, will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
