At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Amy Weirich, TBI special agents are independently investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting by officers with the Memphis Police Department.
Around 3 p.m., Memphis police officers spotted a vehicle linked to an individual suspected in a fatal shooting that occurred outside of a business in Horn Lake, Mississippi, about three hours earlier. Shortly after spotting the vehicle, multiple cruisers stopped the suspect on Whitten Road just south of Interstate 40. Officers exited their vehicles and repeatedly instructed the individual to get out of the car. According to preliminary information from the scene, the individual inside of the vehicle fired a weapon and officers returned fire, striking the individual. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident. The deceased individual has been identified as Corey Brewer (DOB: 3/12/77) of Memphis.
The investigation remains active and ongoing, as TBI agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence, interviews, and information. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her further review and consideration.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead, refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
As a reminder, the TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
