Updated 10/12/21 at 10:00 p.m. ET – The deceased individual has been identified as Bryan Calvin Lee (DOB 1/14/78), of Knoxville.
At the request of 6th District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting of a man during an interaction with officers with the Knoxville Police Department on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred just before noon as members of the Knoxville Police Department Special Operations Squad were assisting agents with the TBI Drug Investigation Division and the 5th Judicial Drug Task Force in executing a search warrant at a residence in the 2900 block of Sevier Avenue. Preliminary information indicates that upon arriving at the home, the KPD Special Operations Squad encountered a man armed with a gun. For reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in officers firing shots, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
TBI agents with the Criminal Investigation Division continue to work to independently determine the series of events leading to the officer-involved shooting, including collecting evidence, and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters; that decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead, refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
