At the request of 10th District Attorney General Steve Crump, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday morning in Charleston.
Preliminary information indicates that in the early morning hours on Sunday, deputies with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance call on Laguna Drive. A female at the residence with an apparent injury was transported to the hospital, but the male subject was not present when deputies arrived. When the female returned to the home with deputies, officers found the male subject, identified as Lance McTaggart (DOB 07/05/1972), barricaded in a bedroom. Reports from the scene indicate that after a brief stand-off, deputies made contact with McTaggart and deployed a taser in an attempt to subdue him. At some point during the altercation, the subject was shot, and transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. No law enforcement officers sustained injury in the incident.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Special Agents, working with investigators with the District Attorney’s office, continue to work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. As in any case, TBI’s investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
