At the request of 5th District Attorney General Mike Flynn, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening in Blount County.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. at a residence located in the 2000 block of Montvale Road in Maryville. Deputies responded to the home after receiving a report of a domestic assault. Upon arrival, Wendell Wilson (DOB 9/17/76) exited the residence with a rifle. Wilson reportedly ignored commands from deputies ordering him to drop the weapon and pointed the gun in their direction. One of the deputies fired his service weapon, striking Wilson in the hand. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
