At the request of 10th District Attorney General Stephen Crump, TBI Agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening in Bradley County.
Preliminary information indicates the incident began just before 8:30 p.m. when officers with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a location in the 1200 block of Chilcutt Road in Charleston. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Steven Ray Handy (DOB 6/15/70), who had reportedly made threats to harm himself earlier in the day. As deputies were speaking with Handy in an effort to get him to surrender, he produced a weapon. Deputies fired shots, striking Handy in the leg. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No officers were injured during the incident.
TBI Agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of this ongoing investigation. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for his review and consideration.
The TBI does not identify the law enforcement officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective agency.
