Updated 8:35 a.m. ET 2/18: The deceased individual has been identified as Elizabeth Ann Stropp (DOB 06/12/81), of Sevierville.
At the request of 8th District Attorney General Jared Effler, TBI Special Agents and Forensic Scientists are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Claiborne County Sunday afternoon.
Preliminary information indicates that around 2 p.m. ET, troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol attempted to stop a vehicle that was the subject of a ‘be on the lookout’ advisory, on U.S. 25E in Bean Station, Grainger County. The female driver failed to stop, and led troopers on a pursuit into Claiborne County and onto Lone Mountain Road. Initial reports indicate the driver stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Leffew Lane, got out of the car, and fled on foot into a field. Troopers pursued her on foot. The female produced a handgun, and troopers fired at her, striking the woman, who died at the scene. The name of the female is currently being withheld pending the notification of relatives. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Special Agents and Forensic Scientists continue to work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. As in any case, TBI’s investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his further consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department.
Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
