UPDATED at 11:55 a.m. New information developed from this on-going investigation is in bold.
At the request of 25th District Attorney General Mark Davidson, TBI Special Agents and the Violent Crime Response Team unit are responding to an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 8 a.m. Thursday at the Murphy Express gas station, 6715 Highway 64 in Oakland, Fayette County.
Initial reports indicate a Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy and an Oakland police officer were dispatched to a reported robbery at that location. The deputy and officer encountered the subject, identified as Christopher Dewayne Lee (DOB 04/06/1997) behind the gas station. Shots were exchanged between the subject and the two law enforcement officers. The deputy was struck, and sustained a non-fatal injury. The Oakland officer was not injured.
The preliminary investigation indicates Lee ran across the street to another gas station, showed a weapon to an individual in a vehicle, and took that person’s vehicle. Lee fled the scene, crashing the vehicle at Highway 64 and Rockcreek Parkway in Shelby County. He sustained non-fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
Both the deputy and subject were transported to a Memphis hospital, where they are being treated.
The investigation continues to be active and ongoing. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
