At the request of 4th District Attorney General James Dunn, TBI Special Agents continue to investigate the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday morning in Cocke County.

Preliminary information indicates that just before 12:30 a.m., deputies with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office along with an officer from the Newport Police Department responded a report of a man walking in the middle roadway near the intersection of Highway 321 and Epley Road. Deputies located the man, identified as Henry Gregory Stroud (DOB 11/18/81), who was carrying a gun and appeared to be agitated. Officers made contact with Stroud and asked him to drop the weapon numerous times. At some point during the confrontation, Stroud reportedly pointed the weapon at officers resulting in two Cocke County deputies firing shots, striking Stroud. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Special Agents, assisted by a team of Forensic Scientists, gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.

As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
