At the request of 10th District Attorney General Stephen Crump, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon in Vonore.

Preliminary information indicates that around 12:30 p.m., a Vonore police officer attempted to stop a driver suspected of DUI on Highway 72. The driver, identified as Stephen Richard Weaver (DOB 4/26/1983) of Sugarland, Texas, sped away from the officer, and ultimately crashed the vehicle into a guardrail a short distance away. The officer approached Weaver and a scuffle ensued. During this altercation, the details of which are part of this ongoing investigation, the officer’s duty weapon discharged, striking Weaver in the neck. Weaver was transported to an area hospital where he was evaluated and discharged. The officer was not injured in the incident.

This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation, as Agents continue to interview relevant witnesses and examine evidence collected at the scene. Throughout the process, findings from the investigation will be provided to the District Attorney General. At the conclusion of the investigation, that office will make any charging determinations.

As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments.
