At the request of 5th District Attorney General Mike Flynn, TBI Special Agents continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday in Blount County.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 3:40 Sunday afternoon along Emert Williams Road in the Lanier community. Deputies were responding to a home in that area after receiving a report that a male subject, identified as Brian Lee Rogers (DOB 2/19/78), was threatening to harm himself. When a deputy arrived, Rogers reportedly approached the deputy and began threatening him with an ax. The situation escalated and resulted in the deputy firing his service weapon, striking Rogers. Deputies rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Rogers was transported to a local hospital where he died. No law enforcement officers sustained injury in this incident.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
