UPDATE, September 6, 2018, 1:30 Central: The subject who sustained injury in this officer-involved shooting has been identified as Syrus Maurice Coleman (DOB 3-25-81).
At the request of 19th District Attorney John Carney, TBI Agents continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting this afternoon in Greenbrier.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred shortly after Noon in a parking lot at 2543 Highway 41 and involved officers from the Greenbrier Police Department. The officers were in the midst of an undercover drug operation in that immediate area, when a subject of their efforts, following an interaction with undercover officers, attempted to flee from the location in a vehicle and struck an undercover officer. The officer then produced his service weapon and fired into the subject’s vehicle at least once, striking him. Medics transported the individual to a local hospital with injuries that are presently not believed to be life-threatening. An officer is currently undergoing medical treatment for exposure to a substance, believed to be heroin. Doctors are currently evaluating the officer who was struck by the subject’s vehicle.
TBI Agents continue to gather relevant interviews and evidence. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General’s office for his further review and consideration. As a reminder: The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases. Any determination as to whether the officer’s actions were justified rests solely with the District Attorney General.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments.
