Updated 6/30 at 6:05 a.m. CT: The deceased individual has been identified as Randy Thomas Groom (DOB 6/4/85), of Lawrenceburg.
At the request of 22nd District Attorney General Brent Cooper, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting Friday evening in Lawrenceburg.
Preliminary information indicates that officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were searching for a suspect involved in an armed robbery that occurred at a pharmacy located along North Locust Avenue. Officers encountered an individual matching the description of the suspect in the parking lot of a nearby business. Initial reports indicate the man was armed with a knife. One of the officers fired his service weapon, striking the individual. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has not yet been positively identified. No officers were injured during the incident.
TBI Special Agents will gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this ongoing investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
