At the request of 9th District Attorney General Russell Johnson, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon in Meigs County.

Preliminary information indicates that just after 5:00 PM EST, a deputy with the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the 1000 block of Nopone Valley Road in Decatur to conduct a welfare check on a female resident. Upon arrival, contact was made with a male subject who pulled a gun and fired shots at the deputy. The deputy returned fire, striking the subject. The individual, identified as John Eaves, Jr. (DOB 9/30/62), was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The deputy was uninjured.

TBI Special Agents will gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this ongoing investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.

As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
