Updated at 8:45 a.m. CT 5/25: The individual who was shot has been identified as Mathew Warren (DOB 09/27/1992) of Lebanon, TN. He remains hospitalized as of Friday morning. No officers were injured during the incident, which remains active and ongoing.
At the request of 18th District Attorney General Ray Whitley, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday night in Portland.
Information is still very preliminary at this stage. Initial reports indicate that an officer with the Portland Police Department was involved in the pursuit of a vehicle at Denning Ford Road when the subject’s vehicle crashed. At some point following the crash, the circumstances of which are still being investigated, the officer fired his weapon, striking the subject. That individual, who has not yet been identified, was transported to a Nashville hospital, where his condition is unknown at this time.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. TBI Special Agents continue to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
As more information becomes available related to this investigation, the updates will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
