Updated 5/10 at 4:50 p.m. ET: The deceased individual has been identified as Kenneth Carter, DOB 04 /20/72, of Morristown.
At the request of 3rd District Attorney General Dan Armstrong, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting Thursday morning in Morristown.
Preliminary information indicates that just before 10:00 AM EST, officers with the Morristown Police Department observed a male subject, known to have outstanding warrants, inside a vehicle parked in the 400 block of Hayter Drive. As officers attempted to take the subject into custody, he began driving toward officers in an effort to get away, hitting two police vehicles in the process. During the escalation of events, one of the officers fired his service weapon into the subject’s vehicle, striking him. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. A female passenger in the subject’s vehicle was not injured. Additionally, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
TBI Special Agents will gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this ongoing investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com as they are available.
