Updated 2/23/18 at 12:15 a.m. ET: The deceased individual has been identified as Joshua D. Babb (DOB 6/15/91), of Church Hill, TN.
At the request of 3rd District Attorney General Dan Armstrong, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening in Hawkins County.
Preliminary information indicates that just before 7:00 p.m., the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence located in the 400 block of Hickory Hills Road in Church Hill. Upon arrival, deputies observed a male subject through the front door of the residence with what appeared to be a gun in his waistband. The subject came out onto the front porch of the home and confronted deputies. He refused to comply with verbal commands. Deputies deployed a taser in an attempt to subdue the subject, which was not successful. At some point during the confrontation, the subject threatened officers with the gun in his possession, which resulted in one of the deputies firing shots, striking the subject. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies were not injured.
TBI Special Agents, assisted by a team of Forensic Scientists, will gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this ongoing investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
