Updated 1/9/18 at 12:00 a.m. ET: The deceased individual has been identified as Eugene Loftis (DOB 6/24/92), of Church Hill, TN.
At the request of 3rd District Attorney General Dan Armstrong, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in Hawkins County.
Preliminary information indicates that the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office received information that a male subject wanted on felony warrants out of Dickenson County, Virginia was at a residence on Okolona Road in Church Hill. Deputies responded to the residence and spotted the subject in a vehicle in the driveway. Deputies approached the car and asked the man to show them his hands. At that point, the subject reached for a gun. One of the deputies fired shots, striking the subject. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies were not injured.
TBI Special Agents, assisted by a team of Forensic Scientists, will gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence as part of this ongoing investigation. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
