Updated 9:15 a.m. – The deceased individual has been identified as Carmen William Rongione (DOB 8/29/75), of Cosby, TN.
At the request of 4th District Attorney General James Dunn, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Cocke County.
Preliminary information indicates that just after 7:30 PM, a deputy with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 600 block of Middle Creek Road in Cosby after receiving information that a male subject, known to have outstanding warrants, was walking along the road. Upon seeing the deputy, the male subject fled into a wooded area. The deputy pursued on foot. At some point during the foot pursuit, the male subject reportedly confronted the deputy with a weapon which resulted in the deputy firing shots, striking the man. He was transported to the Newport Medical Center where he later died.
A team of Agents and Forensic Scientists worked throughout the night to gather any and all relevant details. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.
As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.
Updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
