NASHVILLE – Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have obtained an indictment for a Sumner County man in connection to the investigation of an alleged sexual assault in the county’s jail.
At the request of 18th District Attorney General Ray Whitley, TBI Agents began investigating the allegation on August 24th. On the same date, a corrections officer at the Sumner County Jail discovered what appeared to be two inmates engaged in a sex act inside their cell. After authorities separated the two inmates, Paul Smith told officers he had been forced to participate in the sex act by his cellmate. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that Smith was not truthful with his statement and the sex act was, in fact, consensual.
On October 6th, the Sumner County Grand Jury returned an indictment, charging Smith with one count of False Report. Today, a TBI Agent served the 21-year-old Hendersonville man at the Sumner County Jail, where he remains incarcerated on unrelated charges.
