NASHVILLE – Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, working alongside authorities from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, have arrested a Summertown man and charged him with Criminal Homicide in connection to the death of his former girlfriend.
At the request of 21st District Attorney General Kim Helper, TBI Special Agents joined the investigation into the welfare of Britney Nicole Pigg and her six-month-old child on Wednesday, after Pigg missed a previously scheduled paternity hearing in Lawrence County involving her ex-boyfriend, Shane Vernon Shirley. During the course of the investigation, Agents found the body of the 25-year-old in her car on property belonging to Shirley’s uncle in the 500 block of Drakes Lane in Summertown. Authorities later found the child unharmed at the home of an acquaintance of Shirley’s current girlfriend.
The investigation further revealed Pigg met with Shirley at his home, in the 100 block of Hannah Road in Summertown, the night before the paternity hearing and later revealed Shirley as the individual responsible for Pigg’s death. This morning, authorities arrested the 23-year-old Summertown man and charged him with one count of Criminal Homicide. At the time of this release, Shirley was in the custody of the Lewis County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond. The incident remains under investigation.
