KNOXVILLE – Special Agents with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have arrested a Knoxville woman who faces charges of identity theft and acquiring controlled substances by fraud.
In March 2015, TBI Special Agents began investigating Sherri Alvinia DeVault Smith, after receiving a complaint from Covenant Health Corporate Security that an individual was trying to obtain controlled substances under false pretenses. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that between September 2014 and February 2015, Smith, 45, obtained narcotics using the identity of another individual during at least three different visits to a Knoxville pharmacy.
Today, Smith was arrested and charged with one count of Acquisition of Controlled Substance by Fraud or Forgery and three counts of Identity Theft. Smith was booked at the Knox County Jail and was released after posting a $16,000 bond.
