MEMPHIS – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate this morning’s kidnapping of a Fayette County teenager, as the charges against the man accused begin to accumulate.

The TBI, along with Oakland PD, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department, continue to investigate the incident that occurred around 12:15 this morning in the parking lot of the Walmart in Oakland. The victim, a 16-year-old girl, told investigators Ma’Quarious Lynn Cathey kidnapped her at knife point and forced her into a vehicle. The girl’s boyfriend notified 911. A BOLO (Be-On-The-Lookout) was placed and a pursuit began in Fayette County, initiated by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. THP became involved in the pursuit as it continued East on I-40. Cathey was operating the vehicle and, during the pursuit, sideswiped two THP cruisers. Troopers were not hurt. Cathey wrecked the vehicle near Mile Marker 98 on I-40 in Henderson County, after which he fled on foot. Cathey broke into a building on Highway 104 in the Mt. Gilead area while fleeing and was ultimately captured off of Highway 104 near the Douglas Meadows Subdivision. The kidnapping victim was recovered uninjured. Investigators do not believe she knew her attacker.

This afternoon, authorities in Henderson County charged Cathey with one count of Burglary. At the time of this release, he was being held in the Henderson County Jail on $5,000 bond. The TBI has also secured warrants for Cathey in Fayette County, charging him with two counts of Aggravated Kidnapping, one count of Felony Evading Arrest in a Motor Vehicle Endangering Others, and one count of Carjacking. Furthermore, it is expected THP will also charge Cathey in connection to Monday’s incident.
