JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s case from a February incident that occurred in the Hawkins County Jail has resulted in a charge against a former guard after he was indicted by the Hawkins County grand jury earlier this week.

Roy Junior Mathes, 37, of Rogersville, Tenn. was indicted on one count of assault. On March 1, 2013, the 3rd Judicial District Attorney General requested to investigate an incident that occurred in the jail on February 23, 2013 between Mathes and an inmate. The inmate, Lloyd Gibson, 24, of Johnson City, was being held on for failing to appear in court on previous charges when he was removed from his cell due to his involvement in a vandalism incident in the jail. During the removal, Mathes pushed Gibson’s body causing Gibson to strike his head against at least one jail door in the facility. TBI investigated the assault with the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office. Mathes was terminated from his position.

Mathes was booked into the Hawkins County Jail this morning.
