UPDATE (6/24/25, 3:25 PM CT): The individual who died as a result of this incident has been identified as Patrick Brian Shoptaw (DOB 5/30/86).
At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI special agents continue to investigate the circumstances of an officer-involved shooting Monday morning involving the Memphis Police Department.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 5:48 Monday morning at a gas station in the 4200 block of Winchester Road, where officers were dispatched to a report of an armed subject. When they arrived to investigate, officers found a man standing in front of the building. When one of the officers confronted the subject, he retreated into the business and refused to surrender. When the officer followed the individual into the gas station, the man charged the officer with a screwdriver in his hand, striking the officer in his vest. At that time, the officer fired his weapon, striking the man. The subject was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured. An individual who was injured by the subject before officers arrived was treated and released at a local hospital.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit. Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
