UPDATED 5/6/25 at 9:26 a.m. – The deceased individual has been identified as Cody Alexander Burke (DOB: 5/15/97).

At the request of 2nd Judicial District Attorney General Barry Staubus, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening in Kingsport.

The incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. at the Crockett Ridge Golf Course, located along L Jack Private Drive. Preliminary information indicates officers responded to the golf course on a report of a man armed with a handgun threatening to harm himself. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the man and attempted to negotiate with him, with no success. At some point during the encounter, the situation escalated, resulting in both an officer and the male subject firing shots. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

At this time, this investigation remains active and ongoing. TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer was justified in these matters.  That decision rests with the district attorney general requesting TBI’s Involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments to answer as they see fit.

Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
