Updated 1/22/25: The deceased individual has been identified as Jeffery Lach, Jr. (DOB 2/22/1991).
At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in Memphis.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:40 a.m., deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office encountered a subject in a stolen car in the 1600 block of North Shelby Oaks in Memphis. When deputies attempted to take the individual into custody, the situation escalated, and for reasons still under investigation at least one deputy fired shots, striking the subject. The male subject was pronounced deceased on the scene. No deputies were injured.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
