At the request of 1st Judicial District Attorney General Steve Finney, TBI Special Agents continue to investigate the circumstances of an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning involving officers from the Johnson City Police Department.

Preliminary information indicates the incident happened shortly after 2:00 Sunday morning. Earlier in the night, officers responded to a domestic violence call on Walnut Street and later encountered the subject near West Walnut Street and South Roan Street, where the subject reportedly pointed a firearm at officers, after which at least one officer fired upon the subject, who ran from the location. The officers continued to pursue him and encountered him behind a convenience store near South Roan Street and Pine Street. There, the subject reportedly pointed the firearm at officers again, resulting in at least one officer firing upon him, striking and injuring him. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.

Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com
