Updated 09/08/2024, 9:55 a.m.: The individual who was shot in this incident, Rickey Ray Reed (DOB 10/05/1997), was pronounced deceased Saturday night.

At the request of 25th Judicial District Attorney General Mark Davidson, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting Friday involving deputies with the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department.

Preliminary information indicates that at around 2:50 a.m. on September 6th, law enforcement initiated a traffic stop on Highway 51 in Tipton County, the driver refused to pull over, and a pursuit ensued.  The subject drove to a home on Narrow Lane, south of Covington, where he barricaded himself inside. Tipton County Sheriff’s Department SWAT responded to the barricade and made entry into the house. When they encountered the individual inside, he made a sudden movement, causing deputies to fire their weapons at approximately 9:48 a.m., striking him. He was taken to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis where he is in critical condition. There were no other individuals inside the home at the time of the shooting. No officers were injured in this incident.

Currently, this investigation remains active and ongoing.  TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.  Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration.  The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters.  That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
