At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI special agents continue to investigate a fatal shooting early Friday morning, involving two officers of the Memphis Police Department.

Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 Friday morning at a home in the 3000 block of Dumbarton Road, where officers were responding to reports of a stabbing. Officers determined the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Freeman Sherman, Jr. , was in an upstairs bedroom armed with several knives. As officers approached, Sherman swung a knife at the two officers, causing one of them to fall down the flight of steps. The second officer fired at the suspect, killing him. The stabbing victim suffered critical wounds and remained hospitalized at the time of this release. The officer who fell sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
