UPDATE (April 27, 2024, 3:20 p.m. CT): Agents have identified the deceased man involved in this incident as 30-year-old James Q. Hampton.

At the request of 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI special agents continue to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon involving deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of Barron Avenue, where the deputies, all assigned to the department’s SWAT team, arrived to serve a search warrant in connection to an ongoing narcotics investigation. Preliminary information indicates that as the deputies exited their vehicle, a man in a waiting vehicle sped toward them. In response, the deputies fired upon the vehicle, shooting the driver, who died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident.

At this time, this investigation remains active and ongoing. TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the officers’ actions were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.

Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.
