NASHVILLE- The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation last night arrested a Macon County man for extorting a Cheatham County woman after his scheme, demanding money, was interrupted by a TBI covert operation.

William Kelly Stewart III, 38, of Lafayette, was charged with one count of extortion and booked into the Cheatham County Jail. On August 13, 2013, the 23rd District Attorney General requested TBI investigate allegations that Stewart was placing multiple phone calls and sending multiple text messages to the victim claiming that she owed him $500 for smuggling drugs into her brother who is detained as an inmate in the Robertson County Detention Facility. Stewart kept telling the victim that she or her elderly mother needed to pay him because he knew where she lived and he was coming to get the money. Stewart demanded instructions for dropping off the money, which was placed by agents. When Stewart retrieved the bag, he was arrested without incident.

The Pleasant View Police Department assisted in the investigation. Stewart was booked into the Cheatham County Jail.
