Knoxville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation yesterday arrested the former office manager for the Sneedville Utility District for theft after she was indicted by the Hancock County grand jury earlier this week.
Connie Renee Mitchell, 42, of Sneedville, Tenn. was charged with one count of theft over $1,000. In March of 2012, the 3rd Judicial District Attorney General’s Office requested a TBI investigation after the Comptroller’s Office Division of Municipal Audit conducted an audit on the Sneedville Utility District in August of 2011. The Comptroller’s Office audit found that cash funds held at the office were missing and a number of “I.O.U’s” and personal checks were written by Mitchell. Mitchell admitted to investigators that she took the money to pay personal bills. Mitchell has since been fired from her position with the utility district.
Mitchell was booked into the Hancock County Jail on $20,000 bond.
